Tabards

When It Rains...

I made this piece to work through some feelings of grief and loss. When a much-loved cousin died, I realized that I had lost five family members in about a year. This is another rag patch piece, using hand-dyed velvet, hand-woven chenille by my friend Carol Droege, and hand-dyed fibers couched over the top. The covering strips are silk dupioni.

I chose these colors to indicate the darkness of a rainy day and remembering that purple was an appropriate mourning color during Victorian times. There are five sets of three ultrasuede teardrops for my departed loved ones. Each teardrop has a black heart-shaped sequin as I remember them with love. The black sequin star on the back reminds me that life goes on - even in the dark times.
