The Amazing Bog Coat

First Millennium Inspiration

Over a thousand years ago, a Danish fellow was buried in a bog wearing a simple garment made from a single animal skin. Nothing was wasted in the construction of this garment, which provided the inspiration for the modern version that we call the Bog Coat.

Many wearable artists have used this easy construction as a basis for their design work, and although these coats have little in common with the original, they all share the basic idea of wasting nothing.

My first exposure to this wonderful coat was in a book by Virginia Avery: Wonderful Wearables, A Celebration of Creative Clothing.
