| This
garment was designed and created for Renaissance, the Bernina
Fashion Show which premiered at Houston, Texas as part of International
Quilt Market and Festival in late October 2001.
Every
year, the earth experiences a renaissance, or rebirth. We call it Spring.
For centuries, artists and philosophers have attempted to explain the
unexplainable by personifying it and creating a myth surrounding it.
And so, a myth: Spring wanders into the garden and brings the earth
back to life. Her heralds are the lowly crocus, from which we get the
colors of this ensemble.
Inspiration
for most of the design elements throughout this ensemble comes from
the highly ornamental paintings of Gustav Klimt.

The
original design opera coat is hand-dyed silk noil in bright spring green,
quilted over a split layer of cotton batting, and decorated with fabric
collage strips of gold, green and coral satins. The collage was created
by layering irregular shapes of fabric over a stabilizer, sprinkling
with Tintzl and short bits of thread, topping everything with a layer
of pale yellow tulle, and stippling. After removing the stabilizing
paper, the collage was cut into gently curved strips, and stippled again
to attach them to the coat. The collage strips are outlined in gold
metallic threads and beads. Additional ornamentation consists of machine
made needle lace motifs in assorted golds and greens. The coat is lined
with hand-dyed and painted silk habotai.
