The Shattered Circles

Trying to work with putting circles together for the Mandala series was a challenge. Toward the end of the project, life at our house took some unexpected and not terribly pleasant turns. Without going into the gory details, life seemed to be coming apart, rather than coming together. I found myself asking one of my favorite questions: "What if . . .?" and applying it to the circles I was working with. What if, instead of putting circles together, I took them apart? And the Shattered Circles series was begun. Over the next year and a half, I created 45 of these small quilts, and although I go in spurts, I see no end to the possibilities. I even ended up with a couple of mini-series within the larger project: Nesting and Emerging, which speak to my need to rest, regroup and start again.

Despite the divers shapes the shattered circles show when finished, each starts as a perfect circle. In most cases, the circle is cut from a single piece of fabric and projected onto a single background piece. In several (like the first two here) there is one additional fabric represented. In one case, the quilt was made from a single piece of fabric, one end of which had enough contrast with the other to provide the circle. All of this series is made primarily from my own dyed fabric.

The three quilts shown here were displayed at the National Quilting Association show in Peoria, Illinois in July 2004, and are available for purchase. I hope to publish a CD about the process and techniques involved in creating this series. If you are interested, make sure you are on my newsletter list, you can sign up on the Contacts page.
