The Mandalas

In the autumn of 2002, Susan Towner-Larsen asked me to create a quilt for her upcoming (June 2004 release) book Within Sacred Circles: Meditations and Mandala Quilts, and after a little research I agreed. Susan suggested certain mental or spiritual excersizes for starting the design process, and asked that the spiritual process of creating the work be recorded. This ended up taking the form of journal entries during the five months and three quilts that came out of this challenge.

Feel free to follow my process and thoughts through the next three pages, or you can ignore it and look at the quilts themselves.

September 2003:
After reading the exercise included, I had the feeling that this approach was going to be very foreign for me. Especially the part about creating with paper first. But I was determined to give it an honest try. After two weeks of reading and sketching and thinking and moving things around, I was no closer to starting a quilt than I had been at the beginning. I decided this project was not for me, and was all set to write to Susan, backing out of my commitment.

The Mandala Quilts:
