The Mandalas: Reach Out in the Darkness

October 2003:
A little time passed, and one morning I awoke with the phrase "reach out in the darkness, and you will find a friend" (Reach Out of the Darkness by Friend and Lover, 1968) running through my head. I recognized it as a fragment from an old rock and roll song, but couldn't recall the rest. I wandered into the studio, and an hour later I had laid out a fabric collage of a bright turquoise circle on a dark background. Within a few moments, the glittering cross was in place. Could this be a mandala? It was a circle - a symbol of eternity - with another symbol of our Eternal Friend. It didn't look much like a traditional quilt, or even a contemporary one, but I was intrigued, so I quilted it and set it aside.

The title aparently is "Reach Out of the Darkness" even though the words are "in the darkness", here are the complete lyrics so it won't start buzzing around between your ears too!

I think it's so groovy now
That people are finally getting together
I thinks it's wonderful and how
That people are finally getting together
Reach out in the darkness
Reach out in the darkness
Reach out in the darkness
And you may find a friend

I knew a man that I did not care for
And then one day this man gave me a call
We sat and talked about things on our mind
And now this man he is a friend of mine
Don't be afraid of love
Don't be afraid, don't be afraid to love
Everybody needs a little love
Everybody needs somebody
That they can be thinking of
