The Journal Quilt project was conceived by Karey Bresenhan, president of Quilts, Inc. and open to all members of the QuiltArt List. This project made its debut at the International Quilt Market and Festival in Houston, Texas in 2002. About 150 art quilters sent their small quilts from January through September to the festival, creating an exciting exhibit that kept drawing me back for another look.
The rules were simple: the size must be 8-1/2 x 11 inches and we were to keep notes - a journal - of our work and thoughts. To this, I added a rule of my own. I would use only materials that were leftover from some other project I was working on that month, thereby creating a journal of my year's work. Similar rules applied for several years, with the nubmer of submissions per artist dropping to five in 2004 and in 2007 the format was changed to a single piece per artist, 17 x 22 inches.
Karey edited a wonderful book, Creative Quilting, The Journal Quilt Project, featuring 400 quilts from the first five years of the project.
