Larkin Jean Van Horn,
The Cross Roads Gallery

The Cross Roads series began as an experiment with carving the cross stamp used in each piece. Cross Roads I (not shown here) included three of the cross prints, and inspired the rest of the series. Although it was my intention to deal with the liturgical colors in a pure way, there were times when the design itself dictated a deviation from the plan. For example, Advent has much more green than normally associated with that season, as a result of meditation on the verse chosen to accompany the piece.

There are three pieces for the Pentecost season, the 23 weeks following the celebration of Pentecost. Since this period covers portions of Spring, Summer, and Fall, I wanted to include all three seasons in the series.

In choosing the verses to accompany each piece, it was interesting to me that sometimes the verse was one that I chose before beginning to work and other times it was revealed to me as I worked. In the case of the Lenten piece, the verse came out of the beading, which then seemed to me to be God's tears, as He sent his son to death.

Much of the work on this series was completed during an artist residency at the Grünewald Guild in the summer of 2001. I envision this series to be used as changing focal pieces for a home prayer/meditation space, or hung as a group in a larger space, and it is available for purchase only as a set for $2,500.
